The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.

When I run backup on my exchange server 2010 it fails with error "The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database." I have been using Windows Server Backup since the day I got exchange 2010 installed.
The status of Windows Backup is Completed with warnings.

In the application log I am getting Event ID 9782 and Event ID 565.

Checked the health of Exchaneg Writers by running the command vssadmin list writers and writer was stable. Did some research and found that there is one RegistryKey EnableVSSWriter Key which needs to be added on the exchange server.

After doing the change in registry I had to restart the Microsoft Exchange Replication service. But when I went to restart this server it failed with local server error. In application I got two Event ID 4004 and Event ID 4999. Lession learned here is, this registy entry is not for stand alone exchange server but the server in DAG (Database Availability Group). Deleted the registry key EnableVSSWriter and started the service.

I had McAfee anti virus installed on the server and checked the C:\Quarantine folder and found that their are tons of file with .bup and each file is of 1 MB.
Set the exclustion on database (.edb) and (.log) file of exchange server and ran the backup again and backup failed again. Stopped all the McAfee services on the server and ran the backup and it completed successfully.
Note: You will not able to stop McAfee services until or unless you disable the component from McAfree console.

Remember Windows Server Backup is volume level backup and you should install 3rd party backup application for exchange server backup.
I hope this article helps.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I want to give permission to User A  only to create mailbox in exchange 2010, apart from creating mailbox user should not be able to make any changes to exchange server.
To do that, go to Exchange Management Console...Toolbox...Role Based Access Control (RBAC)

You can either create new Role Group or use existing "Recipient Management" make sure you remove all other Assigned Roles except "Mail Recipient Creation" only in case you don't want user to create or do anything else as in my case.
Once it's done, log in to the exchange server and make sure you only see Organization Configuration and Recipient Configuration in Exchange Management Console.
In my case User A will be logging to the server through RDP not directly to the server. User A logged in to exchange server successfully and when he opened EMC, he got credential pop up, after entering the credentials, he go the below error message.
I checked on the internet and got this technet article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc940238.aspx but it didn't helped. I ran this command hoping that it will fix the issue net user UserA /active:yes but it didn't worked.
Technical it shouldn't give this error (as far as the exchange server permission concerns), but the error is talking about Windows and not Exchange. I checked UAC (User Access Control) and found that it was set to Always notify. I set it to Never notify (disable) and restarted the server.

After the restart, User A logged in to the server and now he can open the EMC successfully and can only see Organization and Recipient Configuration. Created few Test Mailbox and it worked like the way it should be.

The nominated Exchange server for offline address book 'Default Offline Address List' has been deleted.

I was helping out one of my friend in installation of Exchange Server 2010 SP2 in existing exchange 2003 environment.

Environment:
2 Domain Controller
Exchange Server 2003 SP2
Exchange Server 2010
Exchange Server 2010 on domain controller

After installing all the prerequisite for windows and completing the active directory switches which are
Setup.com /pl, Setup.com /ps, Setup.com /preparead and Setup.com /preparedomain we started the exchange installation and readiness check failed with error.

Client Access Role Prerequisites

Error:
The nominated Exchange server for offline address book 'Default Offline Address List' has been deleted. Nominate a valid server and restart setup.

After digging into it, I found that exchange server 2003 OAB generation server is pointing to the server which do not exist in the environment.
OAB
Open Exchange System Manager…>Recipients…>Offline Address List…>Right click properties of Default Offline Address List…Click brows on Offline address list server and select the running exchange 2003 server in the environment.

Correct OAB
After changing the server, started the installation and it completed successfully.
I read on the internet regarding the same issue and found that people suggesting that you should delete Default Offline Address Book (List) from adsiedit.msc which is not correct.

If you delete Default Offline Address Book (List) and run the setup again than you will get error saying, Default Offline Address Book cannot be found.
